IRF announces winners of 2006 Global Road Achievement Awards competition

(Alexandria, VA) – The International Road Federation (IRF) announced the winners of the 2006 Global Road Achievement Awards (GRAA) competition this week. The GRAA program, started in 2000, seeks to honor and recognize road builders that demonstrate excellence and innovation in road development worldwide.

The following is a list of the 2006 GRAA winners:

The Louis Berger Group, Inc. for their Kandahar - Herat Highway, Afghaninstan project in the Construction Methodology category.

Dar Al-Handasah Consultants for their Amman Development Corridor - ADC project in the Design category.

Derech - Eretz Highways Ltd. for their Cross-Israel Highway project in the Environmental Mitigation category.

Spanish Road Association for their Private Partnerships Options for the Second Generation of Motorway Developments in Poland project in the Research category.

Delcan Inc. for their Tri-State Partnership for Maintenance Management project in the Maintenance Management category.

Parsons for their Innovative Design-Build Approach to Rehabilitation of Urban Roadways in the Project Management category.

Delcan Inc. for their Transportation Expansion Project (T-REX): Quality Oversight Program in the Quality Management category.

GMC Sistemas, S.A. for their MOVILOC project in the Traffic Management and Intelligent Transportation Systems category.

Building on the success of the record-breaking 2005 competition, this year saw the program expand again this year by 20 percent. The increase in submissions and worldwide involvement in the program is a sign the road-development industry is gaining recognition for its positive impact, said Patrick Sankey, Director General & CEO, IRF-Washington.

"Everyone, not just those of us in the road industry, should know about these projects and the benefits they bring to our economies and quality of life," said Sankey. "It's the main reason IRF started this Awards Program and it's satisfying to see it grow. We look forward to it growing even greater in the years to come."

The 2006 GRAAs will be presented during an awards luncheon on Aug. 1 as a part of the IRF 2006 Summer Meeting in St. Petersburg, Fla.
