PRESS STATEMENT 15 Feb 2011
INCREASED FUNDING FOR ROAD MAINTENANCE

The South African Road Federation (SARF) welcomes the announcement today by the Minister of Transport that greatly increased funds are to be made available for the maintenance of secondary roads. It is particularly gratifying to note that the continual calls for increasing accent on road maintenance by the Federation during the past few years have been heeded by government. Read More

SARF Northern Region’s 3rd Annual Golf Day

Play of the Month

Lisbon Address.

After months of preparation, an anxious check out of “golfweather.com” (good site for predictions) and final reminders to the players about their tee-off times, THE DAY was upon us.  The golf day was a great success thanks to the many company participants and the sponsors (SSI, Letsunyane, Road Mac and Armco).

Not everybody appreciates the pleasure that is to be had walking in park-like surroundings, observing the birdies, occasionally lifting a club, and following the flight of “that little ball” to its resting place in a cup the size of a CD.   But the SARF Northern Region’s golf day is becoming a must for the players in the industry. Apart from healthy exercise, it gives people a chance to talk to their colleagues and clients in relaxed surroundings.

84 players from all walks of the road industry took up the cudgels and dared to challenge their mental toughness and skills against the Kyalami Country Club golf course.  They played in ideal conditions on a superb course, with the indomitable team from SSI taking the honours (and the cup, and some amazing prizes).

Innocent Jumo, the Region’s immediate Past Chairman and perhaps the keenest golfer on the course, provided some pearls of wisdom for the players as he awarded the prizes. He even had the grace to blush as he handed the cup to the winning team from SSI!

Almost everyone stayed behind to enjoy the lamb on the spit, and anxiously awaited the draw for a mid-week getaway for a fourball, generously donated by the Euphoria Golf Estate and Hydro. (Check out their web-site http://www.euphoriaestate.co.za) Everyone has suddenly become “best friends” with Wayne Jacobs who was the lucky winner.

The organisers were delighted to receive such positive feedback from players “Put us down for next year!”; “Great day. We thoroughly enjoyed it.”; And the promise (or is it a threat?) that “We will be back.”

And now for the winners:

New Safety Barrier System

JOHANNESBURG TRAFFIC BARRIER SYSTEM MEETS INTERNATIONAL SAFETY STANDARDS

In a joint venture with Highway Safety Products, the South African Road Federation (SARF) has made a direct contribution to Johannesburg’s road safety by donating Delta Bloc, a world-class concrete barrier system, to the Johannesburg Roads Agency (JRA). The system complies with the new SABS specification for road barriers SANS 51317 and a 300m section has been installed by the JRA on a raised section of the M1 highway above Empire Road.

SARF President addresses IRF World Meeting in Lisbon

The International Road Federation in Geneva considers SARF a serious partner, this is evidenced by the confidence they have placed in SARF by appointing Mutshutshu Nxumalo (SARF President) and Paul Nordengen(Immediate Past President) as IRF Ambassadors to the SADC Region. Hilton Vorster has been elected as the Chairman of the IRF Safer Roads Working Group and Saied Solomons is a member of the IRF Environmental committee.

SARF have also received overwhelming support at the 16th IRF World meeting in Lisbon to bring the 2016/17 IRF World meeting to South Africa – SARF awaits the announcement after the IRF Directors meeting.

“There is no silver bullet. There are lots of bullets.
Fire them!”

Patrick Oliva used these words to describe the necessary technological response to environmental challenges, at the highly successful first IRF "Roads & the Environment" Conference in Geneva, February 5-6

Under the Presidency of Jean Beauverd (Colas Switzerland) more than 140 experts and professionals debated the issues. The event had been given topicality by the latest IPCC report - particularly by study of the effects of man-made CO2 and methane emissions.

"I congratulate you on the IRF Conference quality... I found it useful to be exposed to major private companies' perspectives and advanced initiatives..." Maryvonne Plessis-Fraissard, World Bank, Washington D.C.
