Bursaries

Bursary Scheme

The South African Road Federation offers bursaries to South Africans wishing to undertake further education or training in disciplines applicable to the road transport industry.

Scope

The following categories of study will be considered:

1. ROAD ENGINEERING

This includes:

  • Traffic engineering
  • Transportation planning
  • Pavement engineering
  • Bridge engineering
  • Materials Construction management

2 .ROAD TRANSPORT MANAGEMENT
3. ROAD TRANSPORT ECONOMICS
4. ROAD TRAFFIC MANAGEMENT

This includes:

  • Traffic policing
  • Accident investigation
  • Personnel management (Organization and Training)
  • Financial management

TERMS AND CONDITIONS

  • Bursaries are awarded for study at an approved South African University, technikon or equivalent.
  • Study at an advanced level is preferred, i.e. M.Sc., M. Tech. or above. However applications at undergraduate level may be considered in special circumstances.
  • Full time study will be given preference but applicants considering part-time study or distance learning will also be considered.
  • All applications must be endorsed by the appropriate academic authority at the establishment where the applicant proposes to study.
  • The value of the bursary will depend upon the needs of the applicant and the decision of the Council of the Federation. However it is intended to supplement the student's other finances and will not be sufficient to cover all expenses. It will be paid directly to the academic institution concerned on the bursar's behalf.
  • Applicants must satisfy Council to an extent, which is reasonable that they will be working within the ambience of the South African road transport industry on completion of their studies.
  • Everything being equal, preference will be given to employees of members of the South African Road Federation.
  • South African residents will be given preference but individuals from SADC countries are invited to apply. They should do so through their respective Road Federation or the International Road Federation (Geneva or Washington office).

Bursars will be expected to:

  • Enroll as associate (i.e. individual) members of the SARF (approximate annual subscription : R275)
  • Submit six-monthly reports of study progress
  • If you are enrolled for postgraduate studies thesis covering the research results, academic content or similar for publication in the Federation’s newsletter or other publication, within a reasonable time after completion of the course of study, and
  • Be prepared to make a presentation to his/her local branch of the Federation on the subject of his/her study on a mutually convenient occasion.

IRF FELLOWSHIP PROGRAMME

The International Road Federation are offering fellowship to international students (fund for one year only). The fellowship is designed for exceptional graduate engineers and transportation managers. If you are interested in applying for next year's fellowship, you should contact the SOUTH AFRICAN ROAD FEDERATION, and ask them to nominate you for the IRF Fellowship, as the nomination for the IRF Fellowship is usually being through the native country. The IRF Fellowship is for $15,000.

Applicants or their employers/sponsors must confirm that they are willing to accept responsibility for the financial balance that is not covered by the IRF grant.

The potential Fellows must be applying for admission into a graduate program at one of two US Universities, Purdue University or University of South Florida.
